Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply disturbing incident, such as a hijacking, rape or burglary. Such events may cause an individual to feel anxious, overwhelmed or in denial and may result in longer term reactions and emotions.
Some individuals may develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), whereby the feelings of fear and stress associated with their trauma may remain even when the individual is no longer in danger.
PTSD symptoms may include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks to the traumatic event, nightmares, hypervigilance, strain on relationships as well as physical symptoms. Trauma therapy can help individuals to find methods of dealing with their emotions and cope with the trauma.
