Abuse can take on many different forms and can happen to anyone, regardless of age and gender. There is no excuse for abuse and no individual should be expected to remain silent and tolerate it. Abuse may take the form of verbal abuse, bullying, sexual abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, psychological abuse, emotional and financial abuse or neglect.
Victims of abuse may develop emotional or psychological problems including anxiety disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and personality disorders (especially during early childhood). Psychotherapy following an abusive incident is a treatment option that may help individuals to safely discuss their experience and develop methods of coping with the abuse and processing difficult emotions.
