Health psychology, also referred to as medical psychology, is a branch of psychology which focuses on the emotional, mental and social factors that may affect an individual's physical health or well-being.
Health psychologists focus on the mental health of a patient and help them to work through the emotions they may be experiencing while suffering from a physical medical condition. Other health issues are also dealt with such as the reasons why individuals choose specific healthcare options and how medical doctors and the way in which they treat their patients' emotionally play a role in the mental health of the patients. Furthermore, there is a link between medical conditions and psychological well being. An example of this is chronic pain, which can also be treated holistically with psychotherapy.
