Mood disorders are debilitating illnesses that can cause both emotional as well as physical symptoms. Depressive disorders are common but incredibly serious and may vary in length and severity. Normal daily functioning may be affected as well as the way in which you think and feel.
Bipolar disorders are characterised by a fluctuation of emotions from severe mania (an elevated mood and feeling up) to episodes of depression (a low mood and feeling down). Such disorders may be caused by a range of factors including psychological, biological as well as environmental. Although mood disorders can be life-long conditions, treatment in the form of psychotherapy may help individuals gain better control of their symptoms and treat the underlying causes.
