Forensic psychology is a branch of psychology that deals with psychology within a legal setting. Criminal evaluations and profiling play a significant role in the mitigation of a sentence handed down by a court of law.
Forensic psychologists also assist in determining whether or not someone was mentally ill at the time that they committed the crime as well as whether or not they are able to stand trial.
Forensic psychologists can also assist in civil cases where they conduct forensic assessments to assist in obtaining a fair outcome to all involved. Assessments may be done in a divorce situation whereby the psychologist will find information that may help in custody battles so that the best interest of the child is kept in mind.
Other civil cases may include third party claims, such as injuries due to car accidents as well as medico-legal claims.
