Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are characterised by a severe disturbance in an individual's eating behaviours that may result in serious and at times fatal illnesses. Binge eating, emotional eating, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa are all examples of eating disorders.

These disorders predominantly begin during the adolescent years and are more prominent in women than men. It is important to note that eating disorders, although revolve around food, are not really about the food. Eating disorder treatments involve working with both the physical as well as the emotional well-being of the individual. Ensuring adequate nutrition and closely monitoring exercise are important factors in the treatment of the disorder. Counselling and psychotherapy are also essential to the treatment plan.
